my practice focuses on reworking the connections between language—both visual & written—& how it shapes narrative & meaning. I'm especially drawn to the idea of research-based art as a kind of ritual. these rituals often center on themes like futility, neuroticism, compulsiveness, & sentimentality or grief. much of my work starts with personal archiving & list-making, allowing for exploration of anti-taxonomic critique.
while I mainly work in fibers & on paper, I like to blur the boundaries between mediums. I use techniques like quilting, embroidery, screenprinting, TC2 weaving, & découpé. text art often features heavily in everything I do. though text art is considered straightforward, the looming potential of illegibility (or erasure) from its excessiveness is what draws me to it. this frenzied excessiveness is also what influences my illustrations & textiles; it’s easy to connect to ideas of ritualization, anti-taxonomy, mysticism, & emotional punctum as well.
a very eclectic mix of things I get inspiration from: poems with long titles, AI randomizers, museum storage systems, the quilt-makers of Gee’s Bend, wild animal attacks, language revival movements, kitsch, off-white sea slugs, fungal systems, mixtapes, Medieval bestiaries, houses on fire, r/schizophreniarides, queer futurism, Björk, asemic writing, traditional folk music that can be played at the club, depictions of Judith beheading Holofernes, & all things excessive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
